Exclamation Removed Rear Window

First of all... What a PITA! The FSM says to use piano wire to cut the sealant. Well, not wanting to ruin my piano, I decided to use a piece of stainless steel cable I had lying around from my garage door opener. It was probably too thick in retrospect, but it worked. Sawing back and forth was very difficult with just one person (FSM says it takes two people). And the cable got really damn hot... don't touch it.
Anyway I got the glass out and weighed it. A whopping 27lbs. This is out of an 88 GTU, so no rear wiper. I thought it would be heavier than that, but some of the weight is still in the frame. I'll take that off the car and weigh it tonight. I can probably cut it down to save some more weight before I put in the lexan.
I managed to not break the glass taking it out, so I was going to use it as a template. I was thinking of selling lexan copies. Do you folks think there would be any interest?

How much would they cost?

How durable are they?

If i put 20-50lbs weight on the lexan will it break?

When I am on the free-way doin 120+ will it make all types of noise like a big sheet of plexiglass from wind hitting it?

How they hell am I gonna defrost my window in the morning?

j/k

but these are porbably some of the questions on people minds

I'll have to make one first to see what the cost/ labor involved.
I think polycarbonate is fairly susceptible to scratches, so that means no rear wiper and careful hand cleaning. As far as breakage, it's very strong. I think the way it's mounted would determine it's strength. You would probably rip the rivets/fasteners out before it broke or shattered.
I'm guessing the material will weigh about 5lbs depending on thickness. So we're looking at a greater than 20 lbs of weight off the top of the car.
You can also get smoked lexan. I think it's built into the material, so it can't scratch off.
I'll try to talk to a polycarbonate distributor this weekend to get more details.
You can defrost it with a blow dryer if you want.
Seriously though, this would be intended for race cars only.

20lbs weight savings??? why bother???? unless you are building a track car, heck you can get more than that just removing the passengers seat.

That's why I said it would be for race cars only. I've already removed everything else.
I've seen more worthless stuff that this done in the name of speed by people that still drive their cars on the street.
