Removal and installation of engine mounts (while engine is in car)

I have lousy mounts, and I'm trying to replace them...and oddly enough, having difficulties.

I have replace the passenger side mount. Took a little doing, but I got it in about an hour and a half or so.

However, I cannot get the driver's side. The way that it's designed, it appears that I have to just undo the bolts on both sides of the mount itself.

I can get the bottom one, but I can't get anything larger than a box-end wrench for the top one (I'm reaching in from above the engine, removing the spark plug wires). That doesn't budge it.

I'd thought about removing the whole "arm" that connects the mount and the engine, but that doesn't seem easy, as it's resting on studs coming out of the engine.

And finally, I cannot get the engine jacked up out of the car enough to even seperate the driver's side mount from the frame of the car.

Any tips, suggestions, anything? Thanks. This stupid mount is annoying me

I just put the jack on the engine pan with some wood to keep it from puncturing the pan and then jacked up one side at a time.

I remember the studs on the engine mounts shearing off before they would actually come off.

Probably the easiest way to remove the left motor mount is to remove the bracket from the engine and the bolt that goes through the cross member. Sometimes the studs will unscrew from the engine rather than the nuts unscrewing. Support the engine while loosening these bolts. Probably the best place to jack the engine is at the front oil pan flange, but use a piece of 2x4 between the oil pan flange and engine to prevent damaging the pan. Also, when jacking the engine keep a watchful eye on all wires/hoses in the engine compartment to prevent putting unnecessary tension on them. Loosen the right motor mount and transmission mount before raising the engine. BTW, the left motor mount usually isn't in as bad shape as the right because it doesn't see the high temps from the exhaust manifold.

hmm, thanks... I'll see what I can do.

But, with the engine studs coming out from the side, and the frame bolt (from the mount) facing almost straight down, how did you manage to get the whole assembly out? It appeared as if I'd have to jack the engine up a good 6-8 inches...no?

When I did my car, two studs unscrewed from the engine, so I wasn't too hard to remove the mount assembly. Also, the cross member hole is slotted so this gives you additional clearance when trying to remove the mount. I had to raise the engine probably about 2" or 3". Also, if you loosen the bolts that hold the bracket to the engine, than you may be able to get at the top motor mount bolt. The job is sort of a bitch, but it's doable.

You'll probably get more play if you loosen both engine mounts at the same time.

I would expect it to be difficult if you only loosen one.

hmm...I have three studs on mine. Damnit...only more difficult!

Thanks again! Hopefully the weather is nice next weekend, so I can give this another go. The bolts are all nice and seized.
