VA relay question

I posted this in adaptronic forum as well, but figured I would post here since it is a general relay question as well. I am not sure if the relay is the issue or the adaptronic really or my wiring.

I have wired up an electric fan to a 30/40 amp relay. The issue is it is not triggering the relay. I have the adaptronic connected to the 86 terminal on the relay. If I unplug the wire coming from the adaptronic to the relay and then connect it it will trigger the relay and the fan comes on. This may be because when I unplug it the voltage increases to 10-12 v. However if it is connected it doesn't get triggered and its sitting at 4v when Aux 6 gets triggered due to water temp setup.

I did test the relay with a 9 volt battery and it triggers fine that way. I am stumped here. I haven't ever really hooked these up before. Anyways any assistance would be appreciated.

VA Relay option 1

So I am being a little cautious since I wouldn't want to mess up this ECU of course.

So this is my current configuration.

87 Fan +
86 Adaptronic AUX 6
85 Ground
30 battery

I thinking of trying this when I get home. Maybe I was wrong in thinking the adaptronic would provide the voltage to switch the relay.

87 Fan +
86 Adaptronic
30 Battery

85 IGN Power

I think this would work maybe. Maybe let the Adaptronic provides the ground when it is switched with water temp.

Posting answer here as well since I posted this in 2 areas. I figured the fan situation out with the relay and the adaptronic ECU.

This setup worked great with the aux 6 settings.

87 Fan +
30 Battery 12V
86 Adaptronic (ground)
85 IGN Power

The Dorman 62-118 fan I used worked awesome as well. I gotta figure out what temperatures to turn it on and off at now. I figured why go to junkyard when you can get this for $75. This is a replacement the old ford thunderbird and mercury cougar fans. It had great ratings on Amazon as well and lots of talk about using this for hot rods.
