I dont think that whole theory witht he seals moving around in neutral is right...
just because your not under load doesnt mean your engine is making compression and igniting fuel, and that compression and expansion of gasses will still hold the seals in there seats, would it not?

in my opinion, rotaries are made to rev! the are one of the best balanced engines, an a redline of 8k's isn't going to do your rotary any harm... as i said, my opinion
my colleague at the rotary service station (since 30 years) nearby always says: change oil from time to time, do warm up, use good sparks, enough coolant... and rev that thing!
that's what i do

but: the two stroke engine on a dirtbike usually got a ignition box controlling timing of the spark. to provide a rather useful powerband on these stingy motors the timing is adjusted automatically throughout the whole rpm band, meaning the timing is started with quite early sparking then consequently continuning to go late as rpm rises, 'cause the engine is in need of late timing as high rpm is given. at a certain point (depends on manufacturer), the ignition box is no longer taking timing back (earlier) due to no more performance gained (about 12'000rpm) this naturally prevents the engine from overreving! the only problem you'll have with redlining it for a longer period of time is the twostroke motors tendency to lean out at wide open carbs... but please; i thought we were talking about redlining, not holding the engine at its full rpm for minutes! (fyi, i worked for KTM about 3 years)
2. thanks slpin for calling me a retard... maybe you can't imagine but it really does make a difference if you rev you engine reely (neutral) or under load. excuse my rather non-professional language (maybe due to english not being my native tongue) but i'm trying hardly: the free reving (and shattering into redline) engine has no opposing force/ no "work" decelerating it, there is nothing held against the forward going force of the internals -> the effect is, that ist sort of shatters internally. 'cause all the different moving parts in the engine have some (yes quite small, but there) clearances, so under load these are held towards one direction (revolution forward, against load trying to decelerate it), under free rev (with redline) the clearances are sort of thrown from one direction to the other -> shatter!
so this would not mean immediate damage, it just does harm all your internal components... try to imagine, otherwise forget it and think of something easy!
thanks guys...

no such thing.
take apart an engine and tell me where there would be clearance load and whatever that could hurt it
with your logic, it would mean everytime you engine brake or decelerate, it would hurt the engine.
