Rebuilt motor.

well i have my rebuilt motor put in...i try starting but it wont start....it feels like it was trying to start...when i push start it i get it to start but dies off when it warms upp....could it be my timming i dont really think it my timming because when i got it to start i dont hear any backfired or anything....what would happen if my timming is off....i read it somewhere that i have to keep my car running for at least an hour for the car to idle and wont die again....hope that is my problem.....my pulley does not have the timing mark on the pulley....when i put in the CAS i turn the old motor to where i see the front apex seal on the bottom of the leading spark plug hole and then do the same for the rebiult one and then take out the CAS from the old engine to the new one...the reason i did that is because my the pulley does not have a mark....what could be my problem....i replace my spark plug for new ones. My car is an 86 GXL
