Rebuilding S4 turbo differential
Last week I bought an '87 turbo differential to go into my '88 vert. Im gathering all the parts to do a turbo drivetrain swap plus other goodies while im under there. My main question is is there a rebuild kit for the turbo differential? The guy i bought it from said it wasnt working completely right so instead of just sticking it in and hoping everything works correctly i want to get it rebuilt. I think with enough research and help from friends I could tackle the operation but i want to know if its possible or cost effective. I just searched the forum and came up with nothing about rebuilding them. Ill continue to search more this weekend. Thanks in advance. If I have missed anything feel free to ask for it.

The FSM covers the differential very well.
Depending what is worn, if anything, you can buy oversized friction disks and thrust washers, so you don't need to replace everything. Everything is much easier to inspect after you clean all the oil out of the the limited slip unit, and you won't get a headache from the sulfur in the oil.
You will need to set ring and pinion backlash even if you don't replace the pinion bearings. It is pretty simple as long as you have a dial indicator w/ magnetic base and some white grease. I made a tool to adjust pinion bearing preload and backlash. It consisted of a length of bar stock with two bolts welded to it so that the bolts fit into the adjusters and you could torque them down.

I have to find some reputable shops in my area to see if it is more cost effective to get it done by someone else or do it myself. I would love to learn though thats for sure. The guy i bought it from said the coolant rings were bad if memory serves me right. Thanks for the help. One other question. What does FSM stand for? Ive never figured that out but ive searched all through the 2nd gen archives and Frequently Asked Questions and searched in general for it.

FSM = Factory Service Manual
in the FAQ section under the manuals link it has them for both series
I've been wondering about this too, I've checked out the disc's on Mazdatrix.com but i'm not sure what i would actually need. I take it this is one of those "take it apart and inspect before you order" jobs
Mine works pretty good, but knowing its getting full bite sounds pretty good, and if its cheaper than an aftermarket one to rebuild mine thats even better
so if your discs with the outer pins are still half decent can you just replace the 4 with the 1mm thicker discs with the inner pins and the 1mm or 2 mm oversized thrust washer and that'll give a nice strong lock??
