Question rebuilding an engine?

I'm just curious what all you need to rebuild an engine - N/a anyway. I am not saying I need a rebuilt - just wondering. Was talking to my dad about it, right now my GXL has 156k or so miles on it... kinda got me thinking...

Or is it worth enough to buy a new engine?

Christi - why aren't you asking Dale? He's one of the rebuild KINGS! *tsk tsk*

Ah, forgot about him. Well, I would ask, but I'm still in ATL right now... or I'd be over there asking **** loads of questions. Yup.

Wondering what you would need for a rebuilt, how much $$ you'd need...

etc. you know.. or is it just best to buy a brand new motor ?

it depends really on the condition of the rotor housings and rotors (basically the stuff that doesn't get replaced "normally" during a BASIC rebuild). If all you need is the seals and gaskets and such, you can probalby squeak by for under $1000.

If you need to do any work to the housings.. um.. then I don't know, matter of fact I don't even know if you CAN rework the housings (rotor housings or side housings) without screwing something up.

If you're serious and want a REALLY good engine, go to www.sdjmotorsports.com I know a LOT of racers that swear by them, they're great. Not the cheapest, but then again you get what you pay for.

Barwick - IIRC, you can "sort of" refinish the housings and endplates - it's called "lapping" them. It does, however, slightly increase the tolerances of the engine, meaning it won't seal quite as well (and thus make as much power). AFAIK, it's something you do when your housings/endplates are just barely not-new, and you don't want to cough up the coin for new pieces.

Then again, I may be wrong.
