Rebuild water temp issue

There is about 400 miles now on the rebuild.

Since I've been driving the s5 after the rebuild, I've noticed something for the first time on the seven. The temperature gauge acts like it never had before.

It takes an extended time to bring the car to its op temp (or what I think is-- from the stock s5 gauge). Before the rebuild, the temperature gauge would report the needle just a slight hair below the middle of the temp gauge.

Now i hardly ever does the water temp gauge report that high. The only time I see it that high is when driving on the highway at near 4krpm for >3 miles.

At idle and slow driving, the temperature goes down to near c on the stock temp gauge.

I do have an aftermarket gauge, but disconnected it after the rebuild and have yet to reinstall it.

Any suggestions?

Ambiet air temp is ~50 degrees. outside.
I have an efan and no belly pan.

I've checked the sender connection and the wire seems snug on the spade.

Thanks!

I went with an aftermarket gauge because the stock one reports cold, normal, rebuild.

Sounds like maybe you don't have a thermostat installed, or it failed open.

When gauge reports cool, the heat is not nearly as hot as it used to be before the rebuild., I woudl say the heater is "warm" but doesn't get is hot as it used to...

It's cause you cleaned out all the crap and sludge in the coolant passages during the rebuild?

I don't remember seeing alot of sludge in the coolant passages. The passages were discolored, but I don't remember there being slude.

I did spend 3 hours attempting to clean and streighten radiator fins however...

Even so, that type of situation isn't normal for the cooling system? Prior to the rebuild,t he aftermarket therm usually reported 160-180, sometimes reaching highs around 200 on hot days. The stocker would report cold until 140 and in the middle all the way up at least to 200, though I never saw it get hotter than that.

~1/8 to 1/4 on an S4 gauge is normal, 1/2 is hot, 3/4 is very hot, 7/8 is overheat. I'd guess you have better coolant seals now, or something else. Or it could be the new thermostat (OEM I hope). I believe the thermostat temp is 180.

The stock gauge reports all the way down by the line next to C when idling for several minutes...

you can rebuild an engine but not install a water temp gauge

Its a lot easier to figure out the problem once you have some numbers.
