Rebuild Advice

A couple weeks ago I picked up a 91 gxl with a blown Jspec. I have it torn down to almost the bare block with it still in the car, took maybe two hours for me to do. I was going to rebuild myself, then I was going to have it rebuilt, but now I am back to thinking I should do it myself. It definately will save me some money, but how difficult is it really to do? I would be getting the Atkins video to assist me, or if anyone has one they want to sell, let me know. If I do rebuild myself, where would I get the best:

Side seals and springs
Corner seals and springs
High Pressure Oil Unit

Also, I remember one of the above seals and springs you are supposed to use the FD version, but which one? Any advice would be appreciated...thanks.

corner springs from an FD and get solid corner seals from atkins. I bought most of the gaskets from Mazda. And i bought the side and apex seals from Atkins. They have good prices. Also, try to get hardened stationary gears and new bearings, race bearings if possible. All those engine internals will keep you safe at high RPMs. Whether you regularly rev up high or if you slip one day and accidently go up there, youll be safe. Take your time. Make sure everything is thoroughly cleaned. Assemble the rotors first. Youll need a torque wrench to close the motor. Examine the rotor housings and make sure they are in good condition. Get the side housings resurfaced if neccessary. TAKE YOUR TIME. Good luck.

Oh, and get a Factory Service Manual to assist you too.

Get a rebuild video from atkins first and then see what you'll be getting yourself into.

I agree. Its also not cheaper at all (unless you have the tools and equipment already.) But the sense of accomplishment is well worth the effort and time.

I have most of the tools, there are only a couple I would have to buy. How do you figure it is not cheaper? Rebuilders do not rebuild for free. There are some good deals out there, but still I don't see any that would be cheaper. I am going to test out some new apex seals, the ones from rotaryaviation.com and see how they work. I am also having a mild streeport done while it is torn apart. Where would I find hardened stationary gears and race bearings? Thanks for the info on the corner springs and seals, I will take your advice.

When I said not cheaper, I meant from someone like me starting with no tools at all. Yeah, it would be cheaper for me to just pull the engine out and send it off but I'll be rebuilding my next engine myself. Not because its cheaper for me but I want to learn.

Just got the engine out today, sitting on the floor of my garage. Taking out the engine without a hoist and by yourself is FUN with a capital F for a different word. Sold my 88 SE today too so I got some money to start buying parts. Also bought a Craftsmen set of tools from Sears for $199, but I will need a few other specialty tools.
