Rebuild
Well, my buddy just bought a 1991 Rx-7 5 speed... but the apec (sp?) seals are bad it smokes a bit when first started untill it gets warm..... then the smoking stops... well i can find the seals to purchase all over the place but he wants to do the rebuild himself..... is there anywhere that i might find a book that deals with the rebuild of a rotary specifically or just buy a chilton or something?? or is there any diagrams downloadable off the net... i have taken a rotary apart before but didnt have to rebuild it bc the guy only needed the rotary shaft taken out and he did the rest for some reason..... but another thing.... would a personal rebuild be advised or just taker it to a shop ? i thank you for all the help

Who told you the apex seals were bad? What are the compression numbers?
There are more seals than just the apex seals in the engine and smoke can be caused by a lot more than apex seals.
Satrting smoke can easily be caused by leaky fuel injectors, lekaing oil seals, or coolant seals that have to get warm to seal.
An apex seal being bad would result in 1/3 of the power on that rotor which would include a noticeable bad and unstable idle along with very limited power.
Don't just go ripping an engine apart for no good reason. It's fine if he wants to rebuild ian engine himself, just make sure that he has reference and preferably a how-to video along with mor ethan just the apex seals.

all rx7 smoke a little when you first start them... if theyve been sitting for a day or two especially. ive got a rebuilt motor and mine smokes when you first start it up for about 10 to 20 seconds then gradually goes away. how many miles on the car? on the safe side if theres less than about 70k miles on it, then the apex's are probly fine
