rear wheel bearings changable?

I looked through the FSM and it looks like the rear wheel bearings either don't exist (riiiight...) or aren't changable unless you change the whole hub with it. What's the deal with these? Both my rear wheel bearings are shot, and I was thinking I could just get 'em pressed out and replaced with new ones.

looking at the FSM again... it looks like you need a lot of mazda speciality tools SSTs to do it...

that is probably the reason why i have'nt done it yet

You need a press is the big thing. The rest of the tools you should be able to jury rig.

I put rear wheel bearings (RWB) in my 90 GXL last Fall. This was the second time I've replaced the RWB in the car. BTW, I'm the original owner. The RWB seem to have a lifetime of about 100K miles. I bought the second replacement RWB from an online source. I think it was carparts.com, but am not really sure. The bottom line is that a bearing is a bearing is a bearing. When you buy a bearing from Mazda, it's really just somebody elses bearing in a Mazda box anyway.

You need a press to remove/replace the RWB. With the right tools, it's probably about a full days work, assuming everything goes without a hitch. If you want to save some $$$, you can take the hub assemble to an auto parts store and have them press in the new bearing. Alternatively, you can buy a hub assembly from Mazda for about $250 each.

crap I might as well buy a whole new hub assembly and brake rotor with the bearing already in it.. if I were to have someone else do the labor, it would cost that much anyhow..

SE Part # 510010
GXL Part # 510010
Turbo Part # 510010
Convertible Part # 510010
GTU Part # 510010

Appears to be the same, I have not verified against the MAZDA parts Fiche, the above info is from CARPARTS.com. Remeber you will most likely damage the old bearing taking it out anyway so just buy new!

I purchased long wheel studs from SpeedSource and got half way through the job and realized that they were so long the actual rear hub/bearing assembley had to come out of the rear carrier assembly. After a few hours of cursing I just removed both rear carrier assemblies (what some people call the rear hub). I shipped both of them with my wheel studs back to SpeedSourceInc. At the same time I ordered new bearings, axel nuts and toe elimator bushings from MazdaMotorsports and had them delivered to SpeedSource.
A few days later and only (from memory) $125.00 labor I had my carrier assemblies back from SpeedSource. They had my long wheel studs, new bearings, toe elimator bushings and they had been cleaned. They looked brand new!

I feel I am an "above average" mechanic but I know that I need to leave some things to the pro's.

Browse through the pics and look for the one titled "SpeedSourceInc Rear Hub"

Prior to replacing my Rear Wheel Bearings, I would be on the highway and It sounded like I had loud turbines going off underneath my car. Apparantly they went bad b'c my car was sitting outside for the whole winter unmoved. Shame on me.

The same rear wheel bearing is used on all 2nd gen cars==part no FB01-26-151B--the part supplied by Mazda is a KOYO bearing no DAC4280W-2--if you have access to a bearing shop they should be able to sell it cheaper than Mazda. The list price in Canada is less than $50 US.This bearing is also used in the front hub of the Millenia and should be in stock at most dealers

Got my last set from Autozone. All bearings are not the same. Just like any part there are certain grades. Autozone sells Timken and I can't say for certain if they're better than Koyo or NTN or any of the other big names but it is a big name and I've never had one fail. At any rate Autozone was the cheapest at around $35 per side and they were in stock. Think Carparts get $50.

At any rate, as has been said you need a press. Find a machine shop or a good auto parts store. Shouldn't cost you more than $50 to have both pressed in if you have the hub fully disassembled.
