rear towers

Is there any way you can take them out? I need more room. I really don't want to have to cut them out if its possible. Can they just be removed? What I need to fit back there the towers are in the way and the object is to wide.

Your kidding right?

My advise, don't do a monster garage hack job on your car. The towers support the struts and are integral in the body design.

I am also very curious, what is so important that you want to hack up your car/

well I'm not going to cut them out. I wasn't for sure it they could just come out or not. I'm really big into stereos and I need to fit like a 8 cu ft box back there. The towers are kinda in the way. Guess I will just have to work around them.

Many racers will remove the tin that creates the speaker mounts. Really they do not do that much to hold the car together, yes you may loose some rigidity but if you want to add a big system in the back you probably are not concerned with handleing.

I don't have a pic of on with the towers removed handly, but you should be able to find them. I guess it is a matter of drilling out the welds, grinding the remaining and maybe, depending on how well you did, you may have to respot weld a few areas.

Have at it!

Look---I am not a structural engineer here, but neither are the majority of us. Here's the thing you NEED to keep in mind...

Tearing that out MAY be an issue to your insurance company. Do not take the word of a forum member on this-we can say whatever we want, but when crunch-time comes around, none of us will be a part of that decision. Go to where it counts. In some cases, it doesnt even matter if the work would affect handling or not....if you go telling your ins company that you removed part of the tower structure that the rear struts attach to, that may be all they need to hear to make their mind up. Do yourself a favor and look before you leap. Besides, you have a good amount of room in the hatch. Why not just build up a custom box that fits the car?? It would be way cool, it would be different than what anyone else has, and that says something!!

um, rx7s are unit body construction, that means even the flimsiest looking piece of sheetmetal is integrla to the strength and ridgidity of the frame. if you start cutting into the metal around the rear shock towers you're gona trash the frame and a perfectly good rx7 along with it. all for what... an 8cubic foot speaker box. give me a break. if youre that into car stereo you should of got an old blazer with enough roof for such a superfulous enclosure. realy man what are you thinking? by the way you can get more bass than youle ever need out of 1 cubic foot enclosures. i highly recomend the infinity kappa perfect 10" sub in a .8' box. give it a 1000W amp and youle never look back. and even have some trunk space left over.PLEASE DO NOT DESTROY YOUR CAR FOR SOMETHING AS SILLY AS A STEREO. come on its a sports car, driving fast first, good stereo second. that is why you bought the car right?

i dont know where i stand on this topic, but if u guys watched the RE amemiya video, he hacked them off to custom weld a rollcage in there and a additional bar from tower-to-tower to act as a rear strut, all welded, pretty crazy, but this is only if ur a an all crazed out racer guy, if ur as hard core as Mr. A, then go ahead, but for me ,i still wanna be able to listen to my radio. just my 2 cents.....

Haven't people just customized a box where the storage bins are? As much as I hate big stereos in our cars, you should be able to make a custom box that points the subs at the back of each seat and put the amp between them I'd think.

Where are the people that have done this? I have seen alot of FC's with those pieces removed as well as pictures of cars with that done online. Maybe I can dig up some.

I couldn't agree more.

Off road only with roll cage - its your life.

On road, you risk hurting others - don't do it

one more thing then i'll leave you alone. the fuel pump wire harness runs down the driver side tower so make sure you relocate/avoid it when doing your mod. dont want to cut those wires by accident....
