the rear spoiler

does the stock rear spoiler actually give the car any downforce, or is it just for looks? same with the S5 mirrors?

It does after a certain amount of mph. IIRC it's really only effective at 100+. But I'm not 100% sure about that.

It is too low to do much, since I have to guess that the the boundary layer is seperated at that point down the hatch as it is.

yeah they dont. thanks for the smart remark.

everyone else, thanks. i kinda figured it didnt give much if any downforce, and i dont spend much time about 100mph to really need it.

i bet when mazda made the fc widout the spoiler, they thought that it was fucken ugly so they made the spoiler to make it look better.

they did a good job though, 1 simple design made the car look so much more better

The one thing that it probably DOES to is move the rear stagnation line of the car up a bit and reduce drag.

Mazda actually did make a spoiler that helped with the downforce, I think it was the gtu spoiler. The vets around will probly be able to back me up on that one.

Something that has always been funny to me...

On page 5 of the 1987 RX7 sales brochure, it describes the sun roof as a "roof-top spoiler" sunroof (complete with the quotation marks I show). I think the salesman even tried to tell me the sunroof doubled as a spoiler.

I think the sales department and engineering department have differing ideas about how things work.

Wow. Also, I believe the sport spoiler actually lowered the drag coefficient a bit along with the mirrors and underbody tray from the sport package.
