I finally got the flywheel of and removed the rear housing. Near the bottom of the housing, maybe a half inch or so above the inner coolant seal, is a discolered patch. It also has a texture to it and is not smooth like the rest of the face. Any ideas as to what caused it? It's not a regular shape. I'll post a pic sometime tomorrow.

sounds like rust that got scraped off, was it sitting for awhile at one point and then restarted? or possibly overheating,.. but id look at rust first, especially if there is slight pitting.

Yeah, there's some pitting. The car has done quite a bit of sitting. Depending on your defination of overheating, it's never been above the lower mark at H.

it takes ALOT to actualy discouler them, like a gear comming out or extreme overheating, sounds like it was just starting to rust in that spot a little, ive got this on my plates in a few spots after i scraped rust off i had stored them and the oil got rubbed off in that area somehow. ive also seen it on the motor pulled outa the junk yard that had been sitting for awhile. If its not bad dont worry to much about it.
