It is possible from what I've heard but in the end it's easier just to do the extra work and drop the subframe.

if you have the weight of the car on the subframe like that and the suspension fully compressed, you wont be able to do it. some people do it without fully removing the subframe, but it still has to be lowered a decent amount and then you have to wrestle the diff outta there. id just drop the subframe if i were you, it will be super easy to put back in with no differential and without having to hook any crap back up.

I've done it 3 times without dropping the subframe.

It does need to be lowered, though. If you decided to only LOWER the subframe, leave the nuts that go onto the studs on a few threads, of course, and slowly loosen it until the desired drop is reached. You will need a short 14mm? to get the front diff mount un-done.

If you want to look at some of my old threads, I'm pretty sure I wrote a write up for it.
