Question Rear Brakes

I am working on an 88 t2 installing brake pads and I don't have the tool to collapse the pistons on the calipers. Is there another way to do this without the tool?

The rear brake pistons DON'T push in...they screw in.

There is a special tool (available from most parts stores for about $10) that works well or you can try a set of needlenose pliers...but DO NOT try to just push the piston in.

a big pair of channel locks can also be used. just grab it by the tip without tearing the rubber dust boot. you could also lift up the rubber with a flat screw driver and spray lubricant onto the piston to free it up a bit. work it back and forth, just remember it has to go clockwise and go all the way flush.

If using needle nose be careful not to slip and stab into the boot and damage the piston seal. Ask me how I know

Just get the tool from the parts store. It looks like a little cube with various shapes sticking out of the corners for different caliper styles and attaches to a 3/8 ratchet extension.
