rear brake rotor swap

okay, this is the first time that a search has made me more confused about something.

i basically wanted to know if i could swap the solid brake rotors in my 89 NA coupe with the vented rotors found in the S5 TII/vert.

a simple enough matter, and i THOUGHT i knew the answer; that being that you would have to also get the rear calipers from a TII/vert. however, some of the threads i have been reading say that you can swap the discs without replacing anything else. i don't think this is right, but maybe?

anyways, if someone can give me verify this, and what is needed to swap the rotors, that would be great.

but aren't the diameters different between the solid and vented? usually when changing diameters, do you not have to also change the calipers? or maybe it is not a big enough diameter difference?
yeah, where is Mark when you need him

Well, I guess I not going to answer your question, but I do agree with you. The vented and non vented rotors are different diameters. They call for the same pads, but the calipers do differ. At least they are different part numbers, and I believe the vented rotors are slightly larger.

as i understand it... the front swap applies the same way as the rears, you need to change the calipers along with the rotors if youre converting to a vented rotor... im bout to do it to my base s5...

The rear vented discs are a half inch bigger that the solid ones.

I haven't tried to fit the vented rotors on non-vented rotor calipers, but I suppose if you had at least 5/16" clearence between the current solid rotor and caliper; and the caliper/piston could be compressed enough to fit a pad (the vented rotors are 10mm thicker) it might fit.

agreed on the above comment^

i looked it up and Mazda has two seperate calipers listed for the rear.

only thing is even if the solid calipers DO fit, are there going to be any problems with that? anybody done this before?
the reason i am asking this actually is because i went to the local auto parts store looking for a replacement rotor for the rear. when i asked for the price difference between the solid and vented, the vented was actually HALF the price of the solid
i won't disclose the exact price, but needless to say it costs about the same as getting it resurfaced, lol. somebody somewhere along the line screwed up there. in any case, i am getting it for cheap.

and anyone else find it strange that the rear rotors are a larger diameter than the fronts? especially if i swap in a vented back there and keep my wimpy NA front rotors...

why dont you try gettin aftermarket brembos or even powerslot? i actually find it cheaper to go that route then to go back to factory. almost half the price.

well, like i said. i am getting these rotors for crazy cheap. it's like the cost of subscription for Rxtuner mag, or Playboy...
and the Brembos come in factory spec, which are the same as the ones i am getting, and slotted/drilled, a lot more expensive. besides, it is just the rear brakes. they don't do much anyways, i just need to get them replaced because one is warped...

If the vented rotor is 5/16" larger in dia, that equats to only 3/32" further out on one side. Can't believe the rotor wouldn't work from a diameter standpoint, but I don't think I'd want to grind the caliper housing down if it did touch. The problem might be the width of the vented rotors. Chances are it wouldn't fit with new pads. 10 mm = @ .40 inches. You could always grind the pads down, but a lot of problems to try and compensate.

okay, cool. when swapping the calipers, do you need to change anything else, or does it just hook up to the old brake lines?
