Rear Brake confermation

Ok, I have read a bunch on the brakes in the archive but still not 100% sure what options I have. My single piston rear calipers have minimal leaking and seem to be sticking a bit as well as torn boots, missing springs. They "work" but dont give me that warm and fuzzy feeling.

Question is do I/can I just buy 4 piston calipers for the back and replace replace them w/o any modification besides maybe new rotors?

Or should I just buy rebuilt stockers from mazda.....or rebuild the ones I have? Do they do anything differnt on the reman ones that I wouldnt be able to do myself?

I already have 5-bolt and 17" wheels/tires. 88GXL I think
VIN JM1FC3310J0605466

Thanks for any input.

There are no 4-piston calipers for the rear, the good brakes that you're referring to are front 4-pots, rear single pots. If you have 4 in the front, you should already have good calipers/rotors in the rear.

I would suggest getting rebuilt stockers from Mazda, the aftermarket rebuilt ones tend to have their e-brake mechanisms fail early. Same with personal rebuilding as well.

Fronts can be rebuilt to your heart's content.

All rear calipers are single piston (floating - on sliders) calipers - the only difference is that the cars with the 4-piston calipers up front had vented disks in the rear instead of solid disks. I don't know if the actual calipers are the same, though.

Ok, just got off the phone with Mazda and they say the dont have the remanufactured calipers anymore. He said a dealer in Arizona has one for the drivers side and some place in washington might the passenger but they cant order them.

I'm pretty sure mine has the 4- pistons up front but it doesnt have any slotted rotors front or rear.

So I guess I'm stuck with aftermarket or rebuilding it myself. Mazda said $51 for the rebuild kit and the aftermarket ones I'm seeing are $75 so......any preference on a aftermarket vender?

Thanks for your help guys.

no stock FC came with slotted rotors. They came with vented rotors.

Mazdatrix may have some rebuilt calipers. They sell Mazda OEM stuff.

You have a GXL, it should have 4 pots in the front.

Ahhhh, gotcha. Excuse my ignorance.

Mazdatrix shows:

BRAKE CALIPER REBLT 86-92 REAR LT VENTED 26-99ZR-FBY5 $145.07

BRAKE CALIPER REBLT 86-92 REAR RT VENTED 26-98ZR-FBY5 $143.54

Kinda pricey for me.

so I will probably try and do a rebuild and maybe swap the old rubber hoses out while I'm at it.

BRAKE CALIPER KIT (2 calipers) 86-92 ALL REAR 49-2400-FB02 $33.03

It is pricey, but if you do rebuild it yourself, make sure you get that e-brake right.

No, mang, get rebuilt calipers by a major manufacturer, and you'll have a warranty (usually). The rear's are not too easy to rebuild.

There really isn't many major manufacturers that stock calipers, beck arnley, ferodo some other company i haven't heard of, and i didn't even know that they came with warranty! I don't think mazda parts come with warranty either.
