Ready to pull the engine, but now not sure if need rebuild--need help

I've got an 88 TII. I rebuilt the engine about 2 yrs ago to replace the water seals/apex seals/corner seals, etc and it ran for about 6 months with no problem.
One morning I was pulling away from a gas station and it shut off. Was able to limp it home, but power was way off.
The next day it wouldn't start at all. I had it towed to a mechanic who said he couldn't figure out what was wrong with it.
So I immediately thought I musta screwed up the rebuild and it has sat for the past year and a half. Also because I noticed a good amount of oil below the oil filter and figured I might have cracked the iron in that weak spot.
Anyways, I recently decided to get it running again and have been prepping to pull the engine.
I've got just about everything off and the engine ready to be pulled when I noticed that the cap blew off of one of the lines on top of the engine. So that accounts for the oil near the filter.
So now I'm thinking maybe it doesn't need a rebuild after all.

So my question is this.. is there anyway to check see if good compression by hand cranking the main pulley? When turning by hand, I can hear the apex seals letting air in/out, but I'm not sure what to listen for.

I don't want to have to pull it and take the entire engine apart to find out everything's good in there.

I think its a 19 mm for the front end of the engine to turn it. I know this is a pain but take off the exhaust manifold and spark plugs and turn it over. listen to the cha sound it makes but sure its consistant on all rotors. cha cha cha - cha cha cha. There is a thread on this I think, you'll have to search though.

I strongly believe it should sound something like this above. The 'cha' sound is consistant.

suppose to remove the shrader valve in the comp check so it lets that air back out

Thanks. Not getting that cha sound consistent on all rotors. Looks like I'll be rebuilding.

pull the exhaust manifold off. turn the engine over and inspect all six apex seals through the exhaust ports.

I pulled off the exhaust manifold. Checked the apex seals and they seem ok. They're intact and 'springy'.

I tried the hand turn test again and it seems that I've got a much louder 'cha' sound on my rear rotor than on the front rotor.

The sound is consistently loud across all 3 rotor faces on the rear. And it's consistently soft across all 3 rotor faces on the front.

Should the loudness of the front rotor be the same as the rear?

get the tester and get numbers, sounds are no good indication.
