Re-opening rebuilt engine.

I may be buying a rebuilt engine soon, and had a few questions about some things. 1st off , the engine was rebuilt, using all new seals and gaskets, and is still sitting on the engine stand, never ran or anything. Now when I get it, I would like to crack it back open, and put in some S5 N/A rotors that I have, and port the irons. My question is , will I be able to re-use all of the new parts? Is it a S4 engine, and I wasnt sure if the apex seals were the same for the S5 rotors. Also I wasnt sure about the coolant seals, like once they are compressed if they are still ok to be reinstalled? Thanks alot.

If they used hylomar on the coolant seals, they'll be reusable, otherwise if they used vasoline or a petrol based product, they expand and will never fit properly again. Apex seals can be reused, basically everything else can be.

OK, I was fairly certain everything would still be ok, except the coolant seals, but I just wanted to hear it from someone else.

I'll bet big bucks that the water seals will be destroyed when you take the engine apart.

Yeah, everything BUT the water seals will be reuseable.

Now, the water seals are 50/50. Depends on the installer and his materials, and the person doing the teardown and how careful they are.

The trick here will be for you to have an assistant when taking the engine apart. Remove the tension bolts, and tap with a hammer on the rear iron to break the seal. Pull up slightly, say 1/8". Have your assistant with a small tool in hand (very thin flatblade screwdriver, knifeblade, etc.) follow each seal, inner and outer, around it's diameter and free it from the rotorhousing or iron (whichever it tends to stick less to). YOu do NOT want to pull up very far while doing this, as you'll stretch or break the seals. IF you do this properly, they wont stretch much at all and you can reuse them, only if you use quality sealant on both surfaces of the seal (rotorhousing and iron) during reinstallation...hylomar or vaseline wont cut it the 2nd time, as they've already been disturbed.

Yes, I have been able to do this in the past, even with engines that ran previously.

You're not going to use the S4 ecu with that right? I have heard it could cause a few minor problems with s5 rotors 9.7:1 instead of s4 9.3 or 9.4:1(can't remember that one exactly for some reason). Not trying to be a nosey jerkweed or anything, but you didn't mention anything about a control setup and we'd hate to see you blo up a perfectly good motor

Yes I am using the S4 ECU. Yes the s4 rotors are 9.4:1, and the slight bump should be fine with the s4 ECU, its not anything drastic, just .3 compression points. Ill just make sure to use higher octane fuel and make sure everything is running well when I get it dyno-tuned.

You might want to look into getting silicone water seals to replace what's in there. They should give you some more breathing room as far as high engine temps go...

Yea, I may just go ahead and buy new seals, as just to ensure that they are good. Dont want to have to tear it apart again..

They went from 9.4:1 to 9.7:1. That 3% increase is going make practically no change to fuel and ignition requirements, so the S4 ECU will be fine.

Yes, I have run s5 rotors in an s4 car with no problem. When you go the other way, you lose a little bit of idle smoothness, though, like putting an s4 motor in an s5 car.
