Unhappy rattling sound from engine and now car smokes like crazy (LONG)

So I replaced my intake gaskets, gave it a tune up and removed the rats nest this weekend. Today I started the car up and it idled perfectly and had good vacuum. The car never sounded so good! So the car is idling and I revved the engine a bit and this "rattling" sound came from the engine. I ran inside and turned it off ASAP.

Smoke was coming out of the exhaust and around the exhaust side of the turbo. I took off the oil cap and smoke came out of there too. I checked a bunch of things around the engine and everything looked good.

I turned the car back on (with the oil cap off), it fired up right away and idled around 400-500rpms. Smoke was shooting out of the oil fill tube, around exh. side of the turbo and out the exhaust pipe. A small puddle of oil formed on the ground underneath where the turbo and DP meet.

A foreign object in the engine (ie. nut or something) is the only thing I can think of BUT I'm almost 100% sure that nothing fell in there since I had the holes covered with a rag most of the time.

Any ideas what could have happened? Tearing the engine apart is my last resort. Thanks.

The only rattling Ive ever heard was detonation. When I blew my first motor, I thought it was a heat shield rattling, but it was detonation knocking on my apex seals' front door.

I thought about a broken apex seal but the car turned on right away and held a lower idle. It didnt sound like a lawnmower like everyone says it does when a seal goes. The car sounds almost the same and revs about the same.

How easily can the engine detonate by just revving the engine without any load?

Are you kidding? It detonates if you look at it wrong!

Will this cause smoke to come out of the oil filler tube, spark plug holes (removed them and turned the engine by hand) and any other holes?

The spark plugs also had a thin layer of oil on them.

When you did the bare block setup, did you block off both of the crank case vents? There are two vents one, on the oil filler neck, and the other one is on the block near the oil filler. MAKE SURE you have at least one of them open to the atmosphere.

The vent next to the oil filler and the one right below the oil cap was vented to the atmosphere.

Run a compression check. Sounds to me like you got somethimg in the intake and it knocked a hole in the rotor!
