Rattle only in boost! Under the shift **** seems like...

Hey guys, have a problem I think, or soon to be a problem, or maybe just not really a problem. Anyway, when I am cruising down the road in my S4 TII, the car is fine. But when I get on it, and hit boost (around 4-4.5k, i have a 60 trim) I hear a rattle under the shift ****. And only does it in boost. Not when I am cruising around. I have no idea what it could be. I know I need a new exhaust to turbo gasket, because its fried. But could that be it? Any other ideas. Its starting to scare me. When I am boosting the rattle seems to be getting louder too, but eventually doesnt really get louder. But it definitely doesnt seem right at all... Any suggestions???

i have the same problme in my 89 gtus, i believe it to be shifter bushing or possibly the shifter. my car only does it when i get on the throttle hard. i've been driving around like this for about 6 months or so. maybe i should fix it, but i haven't had any problems yet, and i hope i don't.

mine gets loud. i just turn up the system and don't hear it. also do you have a short throw shifter on it, or is it stock? it is something you can do yourself, go to mazda trix and they have a write up on how to change the bushing and what not. i just haven't seen any bad problems with it, so i've just left it. i might replace the bushings this winter.

I have the stock shifter. So I would have to replace the entire shifter? Like the shifter stick? I guess, now can be the time to upgrade to short shifter, huh?

well the reason i asked about the shifter was that i've heard that some short shifters will rattle on fc's. there is a section about this on mazdatrix, if i were you and what i'm gonna be doing is just replacing the bushings on the shifter.

How much are the bushings? About? Not that expensive right? And how many are there? 4? Where are you buying yours from?

I have this too, does it go away/quieter when you hold the shifter in position? Ie when in 3rd pushing it towards the front of the car rather than letting it sit the few mm back with a little slack? Mine does. Has been like that for a year with no apparant issues yet.

I need 2 of each? So 2 lower and 2 higher? Or did you mean, just one of each?

mine has the same problem stock shifter bushings are fried just replaced the clutch and notice their condition during that tear down need to replace as well .....and yes it is common for short shifters to rattle only thing it isnt specific to any one series model year etc luck of the draw really (as explained on mazdatrix).....i have a nonturbo and it seams to really be affected when getting into the throttle for instance if your the car jolt or "bucks" coming into gear or throttle which ever it may be the shifter will buck accordingly its the bushing the thing is 20 years old its about time am i right?

Well today, I am going to make sure it is my bushings, which seems to be by the sounds of it, and order it today! And installing my FMIC today as well.

No, Mazda does not make a small "cup" bushing that sits underneath the very tip of the shift lever.
Toyotas with TRD short shifters are well-known to have this bushing, and I think the myth transferred over to FC's.
I've seen people post diagrams showing this, but I have no idea where those pics came from.
No Mazda diagram shows such a bushing...
