Rattle noise maybe from Tranny?

I have a S5 90 NA. I have been encountering some metal to metal rattle which seems to be coming from the tranny. I cannot pin point the sound exactly, but from my observation it maybe somewhere between the shifter and the bell housing (near flywheel). The rattle only occurs during acceleration around 3000 rpms in any gear and the rattle is rpm sensitive, meaning, the higher the rpm the faster/louder the rattle would be. However, it would cease after 4.5k-5k rpms. I would also like to add that my cars performance seems to be unaffected. Although, I still worry about any damage that might partake in the long run.

Has anyone experienced this?

I guess to be more precise its more of tick sound, as if a hammer was hitting my tranny. I hope that better describes it. I just hope it's nothing serious, but guess it could be some kind of bearing. Idk.. but any help is appreciated.

Hmm, a friend of mine had this before. He replaced the entire tranny with one from a junk yard and the noise remained. He then blamed it on his clutch work, but it could just be what vaughnc said. Might have been a different noise, too.
