Just apply this fix on my drivers side door and it's working great so far.

My previous JB Weld attempt failed of course.

Looks like I still have to get a new handle, when I open the handle mechanism seems to be a little higher in its assembly chipping paint on the handle and above it. I must have torqued it when twisting the wire.

better yet a support bracket with small nuts/bolts replacing the safety wire works longer.

Bumping for a good solution! Thanks J-Rat. On a particularly cold day in Boston recently I felt the dreaded snap-pop of the cheap pot-metal breaking. Unfortunately, I only had a spare passenger side handle and took to the forums for a temporary fix. This got me back in action right quick.

The doubler is probably the better long term fix but this no doubt works for a temporary solution.

Be sure to put the larger rod in the plastic clamp at the appropriate height! I put mine a bit too long at first and it didn't have enough throw to trip the latch.
