randomly no tach, car wont start and hold its self...wtf? trailing coils?

randomly no tach, car wont start and hold its self...wtf? trailing coils?
heres the symptoms
-randomly my car cant stay started.
=a/f guage says im dead lean and after 10 seconds or so it falls flat on its face. =the tach works intermittently on cranks, sometimes showing the rmps then dropping to zero or not coming on at all.
i eventually got it to stay started by flooring it to readline and then it was fine. but it did the same thing 2 other times.
i figured if its the tach then the trailing coils are bad. so i changed em. i havent had hard starts anymore, but still no tach! wtf?
btw its an 88 gxl with a 91 engine with 88 wiring and ecu if it makes a diff. cars been fine for about 3 months after the engine swap
