random starting problem - not flooded, not a hot start problem
A friend of mine has a 86 Base model that is having a random starting problem.
The car starts up fine usually, but every so often it won't start up right away. Maybe 3 out of 10-15 times trying ot start it'll have this problem.
When you turn the key, all I hear is a *click click click* from the starter like the battery was dead or something. Sometimes it doesn't even make a noise. The lights will go dim for a second in the car but the starter won't even kick over.
I'm thinking its a bad ground or a bad connection thats been knocked loose or oxidized somewhere but I could be wrong.
I don't know much about FCs as I'm more of an FD guy, but my friend knows even less about FCs when it comes to mechanical and technical issues.
So, where would I start to hunt down this problem? Is this a common problem on the FCs that are that old (1986)?
TIA for the help guys, I really appreciate any advice or info you can give!
btw- I searched but couldn't find anything like this specific problem.

Next time it doesn't start, get under the car and hit the starter with a hammer. My starter just went bad. In fact, Mazda called me a minute ago to tell me my new starter is in.
Mine sometimes just wouldn't start, and when it did it was weak. I thought the battery was bad, so I had it charged, and it still did the same thing. So stranded in a parking lot by super-lube, I remembered a tip and asked a guy for a hammer. I hit the start a couple times, and it started great after that. It still starts great, but I'm guessing it'll still go out, so I bought the reman starter.

Well, the starter was replaced already because we had thought that was the problem. It was done about 4 months ago I believe. The problem is still there unfortunately....

think you're on the right track- how did the ground and solenoid wiring look when you replaced the starter? could it be an ignition switch going bad? battery terminals been cleaned lately?
