Radio head unit replacement - headrest speaker hookup

89 Vert

What I have now:

Factory head unit (still working fine although the display backlight is out)
Infinty speakers in all four front speakers
Subwoofer under the rear deck using what used to be the bass speaker leads to the doors

What I'd like to do:

I'd like to keep the functionality of the headrest speakers. I know they have some sort of seperate amp behind the dirver's seat for the headrest speakers. Is there a way to take pre-amp outputs from a new head unit and run those into the headrest speaker amp? If so, would the headrest volume control still work? The surround would be nice too but not that big a deal.

If you find the answer, let me know. I wish to keep the headrest speakers and replace the stereo with a more modern double din system.

What i did with mine is under each seat if you fish around you will find the wires that go up to the speakers. I took and bypassed the amp by cutting before the plug leaving enough where i could put it back stock if i chose and then i spliced into it with my own wiring and ran it under the carpet up to the deck and wired it into the deck as my rear channels and walaaa i had headrest speakers and it sounds great. All my speakers except for the sub are running off the deck and i wired the dash and door speakers together on the front channel of the deck and then the headrest speakers on the rear. The amp for the door speakers is located behind the drivers side dash speaker. I also cut before the plug and bypassed the amp there too. I did this method because i took out a fully functioning stereo but i wanted better sound. I figure one day when i want it back original ill just reverse what ive done. I hope that helps some, i know it made my car very enjoyable.
