radio

i have an 87 base model.
the radio has never worked ever since i bought the car.
and i just installed a deck today, the deck seems to work fine but no sound is coming from the speakers. There are no speakers in the back.
i took the front 2 dash speakers out and wired them directly to the deck and they work fine.
but if i try to wire them normally with a wiring harness i got from pep boys no sound comes from the speakers.

could it be possible that the wires are bad? or whats wrong?
thanks in advance

The factor-installed radio used a seperate amplifier on the output of the radio, so if it's dead or who-knows-what, that probably explains why, if you wire your new unit directly to the speakers, they work, and when you use the in-dash wiring, they don't. Icemark will peobably weigh in on this to give you the word.

i just took the stock stereo from my friend and hooked it up and it works fine.
that means that the stock amps work fine then correct?
so what am i doing wrong when installing the aftermarket one?

It likely means that you don't have the remote/amp trigger wire hooked up properly to the aftermarket stereo and the stock amps aren't powering on. Look at the FSM wiring diagrams and the manual for your stereo to see which wires you need to connect.

Though honestly- the stock amps put out far less power than almost any modern head unit is going to output, I think 15W is what they're rated for max. You're almost certainly far better off hooking them up directly to the new stereo's wiring and letting it power them. There's no advantage to be gained from keeping the stock amp (says the guy going to great lengths to keep the stock headrest amp setup, but that's different).

Also, I just noticed- you're talking the dash speakers? I'm pretty sure those don't use an amp, though I'm not as familiar with the coupe setup- I thought only the door speakers used an amp. I'd double check (again, use the wiring diagrams in the FSM for your model) and make sure you had the right wires hooked up to the stereo.

bump deleted... bumps are forbidden here in the 2nd gen tech section.

If a stock radio works fine, then you don;t have the aftermarket one wired correctly. More than likely you didn't wire up the factory turn on lead.

The radio wire colors are found in the FAQ for FC sticky thread, found at the top of this, the 2nd gen technical section.
