Hi everyone,
As I prepare to replace the drivetrain on my 88 GXL I found that my exhaust system needed to be replaced AGAIN!
I purchased it new off the showroom floor, and I have replaced the stock mufflers four times over the years.
This latest set up had stock mufflers, a Racing Beat downpipe, pre-silencer, and Y-pipe. No need for cats now in Mass!
While removing the system the pre-silencer built-in regular steel bolts were frozen and needed to be snapped.
The Y pipe hanger bracket had rotted away and the pipe itself had developed holes where the cross brace was welded.
Of course, the mufflers had holes around the inlet pipe as normal.
Now, I have replaced the entire system with parts again from Racing Beat.
Let's start with the new pre-silencer, the outside is SS but the studs are not.
The inlet side uses SS and the outlet side has regular steel.
My plan is to use nickel anti-seize lubricant on these studs. I should of did this before!
Also, as a rust and corrosion prevention treatment I will paint the entire system with rust-oleum hi-heat primer and paint.
And seal coat all the fasteners after the installation.

This area is where the cross brace is welded to the pipe.
On my replacement pipe I will be wire brushing and applying rust dissolver gel to these areas before priming.
