Raced my 7 for the first time Easter. Tragic results
FOR THE OTHER GUY!!!
O.K. I know it was dumb to do this, but I had to defend the honor of the mighty RX-7.
You see, I was at a mexican birthday party at a small horse ranch out side of Los Angeles in a city called Montebello. The party was going well, everyone was getting pretty drunk (except me, I don't drink), I was talking to one of the brothers that owns the ranch and the conversation turned to cars. Well all these guys have trucks and SUV's ( I hate SUV's). I told them about the RX-7 I got about 4 weeks ago, I began to brag about how great it was. Well, these guys are pretty proud of their trucks, so they began to bash sports cars. (Mistake)
I told this one guy that just because he can haul a horse trailer at 80 MPH don't mean squat to me. He called over his younger brother and told him what I said. He laughed at me. "My Dodge Ram will distroy a 14 year old piece of sh*t Mazda any time!"
Now You understand I couldn't let this go.
So I challenged him to a race aroung the man made river bed. The fool said let's go. He had a 1999 Ram, candy-electric blue, with custom pipes. I have a 1988 GXL that needs a paint job. We started out on the street above the ranch, and were to race the back streets around the river bed and back to the ranch drive way.
There we are side by side, engines reving, ready to go.
this S.O.B. jumps the gun on me. an takes off! I'm 2 inches off his *** by the first stop sign. He slows to take the turn to the left, I cut to the inside and power slide through the apex engine humming at 6k rpm. now I see his head lights/fog lights in my right side mirror. I lean into 4th gear a little longer then it's 5th. The next left comes up quick, I'm too fast, so I take the turn early to point the nose in the right direction and stay on the gas.
the tires and struts scream in protest, I make the turn but on the wrong side of the road. I correct but to my shock the Ram is right on my ***! This is the long run down the far side of the river bed. He's got more torque than me and begins to pass. But I got 7,000 rpm to produce usable power he's got maybe 5500. By the next left I'm right where I need to be (in front), I take the turn but I almost hit a concrete center divider. one more left and it's back to the ranch. The Ram is nowhere in sight. I give a victory honk as I come down the ranch drive way.
Later, the Ram comes in. His left rear tire flat, smoking rear end, and all kinds of body work missing off his ride.
I guess he didn't see the center divider either lol. He got out and gave me and the Mazda the respect I wanted. He also said that if he wasn't drunk he would have taken me. He wasn't worried about his truck, These guys got all kinds of money.
He offered me a beer, being the gracious winner that I am I got drunk with him. We surveyed each others rides, passed out around 5:30 am and his grand ma made us breakfast in the morning. What a great time I had. Don't think I'll do it again though.

he kept up to a rx7 sports car around a corner. THIS IS A DISGRACE! your shocks and struts and springs and tires need to be upgraded or at least brought up to standards....There is NO WAY a pick up truck should be able to keep up with a rx7 around a corner NOWAY!!!

I was shocked as well, but he said he's done some work to the truck, it did look lowered a little. He admitted the trucks *** did "depart from trim" as we aviators say, around the corners.
As for my car, I do plan on a tire/suspension upgrade in the future.

Not a contradiction. the guy just tore up his expensive truck racing me. If I didn't drink with him, it would be an insult to his hospitallity and his machismo. I thought it was the right thing to do. I didn't say I never drink. I just choose not to, most of the time.

hmmm
I used to drive a stock '98 Ford F150 POS, and honestly, with that newer suspension it handled alright.
If RX-7's have a stock suspension, they need to be upgraded because there is so much better stuff out there.
I like my stock suspension, but while chasing my brother while he was in the F150 (which he totaled already) and I was behind him in my RX-7 with the clutch slipping, he was taking the corners as fast as I was willing to at the time (had just got my car).
But he had no fear and was pissed off at the time, he was willing to go that fast. I wasn't.
Although I was at 130 KPH (70 MPH ish) and he was still pulling away from me around the corners (I wasn't gassing it though, I mean come on, a V6 F150 POS).
Anyway he said that my car must be crap because I couldn't keep up with him, I explained my slipping clutch (the reason I wasn't pushing it) and he was talking all big about the truck. LoL, I showed him when I took him through the corners before winter at over 160 KPH sideways. (Thats as fast as I will go !!!)
