Arrow Quieter Muffler

Hey guys,

To start off, my goal is to get my exhaust quieter. YES, I have searched. I have a 90' TII with a single 3'' exhaust(and cat). The biggest problem: the guy I bought the car from installed a fart cannon on there (4.5'' Tip 5Zigen).

I'm aware that this isn't the only/best method, but I want to get a new muffler to quiet it down(my exhaust). From what I understand, it needs to be 'SS Insulated'. I'm not exactly sure what that means.

I'm probably going to go to a local auto store and get the new muffler there, so i'm asking you guys what to tell them i'm looking for. Oh yea, I'm trying to go 3'' in and a 3'' tip, and I pump out roughly 225-245 whp.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Andrew

are you looking for a straight-through muffler? or does it matter?

You can go to almost any exhaust shop and have them make you a standard cheap-o muffler with 3" in/out

why not leave the "fart can" and add a pre-silencer?

BTW 700 posts....HELL YEAH!

I'd like to thank the 87 rx-7 and the 2 85's as well as my 86 parts car, the 81 junker and the 83 that started it all. but most of all at least 500 of these posts were self serving. So thanks to everyone who has responded to my problems...........

Are you calling it a fart can b/c of the size? You do know that it takes a BIG muffler to keep a rotary quiet if you go single...

SS insulated (packed) means Stainless steel packing, (instead of fiberglass) like what the Racing Beat mufflers have.

Stainless steel is used because most fiberglass packed mufflers have the fiberglass destroyed by the high rotary heat in either a few days, or a year or so (Depending on your setup) and they then become very, very loud.

Being that you are single exhaust, its going to naturally be louder becasue that one muffler has to work as hard as two normally would.

If you want to stay single exhaust, and replacing the muffler alone doesnt get it quiet enough for your tastes, I guess cutting out sections of your pipe and welding in 'silencers' may be the way to go.

A lot of people get a Borla XR-1 muffler and have it put into place as a midpipe.

Just throw on a racing beat TII muffler. It will be quieter. but I warn you they are desinged to work as a pair.
I think the current price is $220 each.
