quick question about turbo ehaust manifold

yeah what the hell is the deal with the big flapper thing in the exhaust manifold

is it there to help the turbo spool up or what,, can it be removed?? would there be gains or a price to pay for this??

thanks

he might mean the twin scroll thingie. It's in there to change the profile of the exhaust entering the turbine housing, and optimizes it depending on the RPM, or something like that. You ought to leave it in there.

If you mean the wastegate, you better leave it in there. It's there to bypass exhaust gas to reduce max boost. If you take it out, your turbo will take all day to spool, if it ever spools...

Nah, he means the twin-scroll flapper in the Series 4 manifold.
It's there to partially restrict the exhaust flow to the turbo at low revs (<2700rpm) thereby speeding the gases up and spooling the turbo quicker. Mazda came up with a better turbo & manifold for the Series 5 that doesn't have it.
It's a bit of a restriction when open at high rpm but I think you'll really notice the extra low-rpm lag if you rip it out. Doubtless there'll be people who'll argue both sides but that's my $0.02.

That's completely *** about face!
If you take the wastegate out, as soon as you floor it it'll boost to massive levels before you can blink, followed quickly but a big, expensive bang! Not recommended...

Hey man you've men upside down for too long! What you say is correct if you remove the wastegate ACTUATOR,but if you take the actual wastegate itself out then Gene got it right.

Yep, I took my twin scroll out. It was fine too.

Just dont wire it shut like I did.
I got 12psi in neutral and 21 psi in 3rd gear.
(i did it on purpose)

oh so that is what the twin scroll thing i hear about,,,i already knew it wasn't the wastegate,,that is on the turbo itself where as i am talking about just the exhaust manifold.

it just seems that even in the open position that thing is in the way,,no i have to debate with taking it out,,,cause some say good some say bad
