Quick question about A/C compressors..

I need to know if the A/C compressor from a 88 GXL (auto if that matters) would be the same as one from a 88 Turbo 2? I tried going to mazdatrix and looking up part numbers, but I cant seem to find a listing on the site. My T2 had the A/C removed when I bought it, so I dont have that to compare to. I assume they will be the same, but just wanted to ask 1st. Thanks

As you can see that is a Sanden compressor. But there is another type of compressor who's name I forget. Maybe Denso, maybe not.

Take a look at how the hoses attach to the compressor. I assume yours are still there. IF there is sort of a manifold attached on the end of the hoses then you need a Sanden. BUT if you have *B*nuts on the end of the hoses...then you need the other type/name compressor. Comprende??? Sanden...no nuts on the end......OTHER BRAND...nuts on the end of the hoses.

There are 3 or 4 types of compressors for 2gens, and it seems they swapped back and forth without rhyme or reason. I know there are 2 sanden types (joined hoses and seperate hoses) and there is at least one, but probably 2, nippondenso compressors (same as above, hose mounting difference).

In fact, some of these compressors mount to the bracket differently. For instance, there are at least 2 a/c only brackets made, the bolt patterns differ by about 1/4" for the different compressors. Don't ask me why.

Now, you can use any of these compressors on any 2gen, provided you get the inlet and outlet hoses that match it. The difference is in how the hoses bolt to the compressor...they also screw onto the other sections of hose a couple feet down the line, and from there on out the systems appear to be the same. So, if you get compressor that you're not sure will work, just get the inlet/outlet lines that mate to it, and you'll be good to go. Provided your bracket bolts up okay.

Actually, to add to what Kevin has just posted, the units appear to differ (at least in the japanese versions) in the reciever/dryer as well... the piping on the outlet of the condenser for the nippondenso versions is smaller than the piping for the sanden versions and they will NOT match up... given the right hoses and right engine bracket either compressor will bolt up to either condenser but you must match the receiver/dryer,and piping to the firewall with whatever brand/type your condenser is. I do not know yet (am still trying to get the right parts) as to whether the nippondenso piping will bolt up to the firewall on a car that was originally equipped with sanden gear.
