Quick one: Safest way to set timing w/o a Gun???
I dont have a timing gun but im meaning to buy one asap. So until then i was wondering what is the safest way to drive around on a car only timed with the marks on the pulley and restabbing a lined up cas. What im getting at is would it be ok to line up the marks restab the cas and then retard the timing slightly? Just to be sure your not driving around with any advance on your timing risking detonation? Also which way do you trun the cas to advance the timing and which way to retard?

If it's N/A, you don't need to worry about it being advanced. My timing is advanced 30 degrees with no detonation and more torque. And clockwise is advance, counter-clockwise is retarded.

ok will do. Your right the car does run fine in vacuum. But who wants to drive a dyson when you can drive a rocket ship. hehe....
I was thinking maybe we should start a new thread for the newbs. Listing all the tools required to own an rx7.

yes, darksider. timing is adjusted via the CAS. as was stated above Clockwise advances timing CounterClockwise Retards it. all you have to do is run up the engine to nomal operating temps. shut it down to be safe, loosen the 10mm nut(or bolt??) that holds the CAS position, start the car MAKE SURE it does idle at about 800rpm. shine your timing light on the pully and adjust the CAS. Simple... be advised that this was a very brief and vague description of how to time your car. search to find a step by step walk through.

If you'll read my post, I was talking about N/A cars. He hadn't yet said he had a turbo. I don't think anyone's stupid enough to run 30 degrees advance under boost, unless they just like replacing engines. And I didn't advise him to do anything, I was mearly stating that, in the case of N/A cars, a little advance won't make your engine blow up, there's a bit of room to play. And Ted, idiot? Come on, we're out of the 3rd grade...

Do you have dyno graphs that prove that your 30-degrees makes more power?

Why would I dyno a car with a stock ECU? And why would I need a machine to confirm basic ignition principle: Advanced timing (to a point) is more efficient than retarded timing. Now you can laugh and call it useless all you want, but it works. And yes, I'd make a lot more power with a turbo, but some of us just enjoy seeing what we can get out of an N/A engine. If you want to argue about my setup any more, let's do it over PMs and not in this guy's thread.
