Quick Heater Core Diagnosis

I'm looking at buying an 87 NA RX7, and the heat does not blow hot. The coolant hose going into the core is hot, but coming out it is cold as can be.
There are no coolant leaks anywhere, and I know that someone here can probably let me know within a few minutes of looking at this. Just trying to get some help and figure out if the heater core is bad or not.
I did a search and found that a heater core will take about 6 hrs for the full install if done right. My brother has been working on cars for over 10 years now and is an Auto Tech teacher, so he'll be the one doing the work.
I am also planning on buying the Haynes manual if I do get the car as I heard it is a pretty nice manual.

Oh yea, where is the check engine light? I looked everywhere on the dash when the car started up and couldn't find it anywhere, and haven't been able to find a picture.

If somebody could let me know these two things that would be great... really looking forward to joining the rotary movement! :-)

Yep, sounds like the heater core is clogged. I've got one that is definately good, if you don't already have one.
And the check engine light is on the warning panel (idiot light cluster.) That is the thing in the center of the dash that has the clock and stuff on it.
Also, welcome to the club! I'm sure the car will be a lot of fun, just make sure you take good care of it and follw the stuff here:http://aaroncake.net/RX-7/newowner.htm

hmmmm...... is it possible that the current owner could have taken that bulb out?

because I checked that section of lights when the key is first on and all of the lights are on....

there is two rows of lights in the idiot light cluster correct? if so which row and number from the left is the check engine light? thanks in advance! -Dylan in MI

S4 was produced from 86-88
S5 was produced from 89-91(theses rx-7's have the round tail lights along with other body and engine differences)

I could have sworn that my 87 had a CEL. Unfortuanately the idiot cluster isn't working right now so I can't check. And as for learning stuff, read all of the 2nd gen stickies, especially the FAQ. It will get you a lot of the basic info.
