Questions from a newbie

I drive a turbo 91 Dodge Daytona Shelby and love it but lately my friend has been trying to get me into RX7s. His buddies run a crazy RX7 shop and build up cars all day long.

Can you RX7 warriors help me out? I want to know a few things about the 2nd gens (turbo)....

-How realiable are the rotary engines?
-stock HP/TQ
-How much is it to build these cars up?
-Gas milage
-Is it possible to build a streetable 12 second car? (emissions testing)
-The life span of a rebuilt engine.

bla bla bla, anything else I should know?

thanks

then they can probably answer all your questions for you and more....

or you can hit the search button at the top.

1. can be good. can be bad.
2. 87-88 182 / 18x 89-91 200/200
3. how fast do you wana go?
4. horible
5. yes
6 depends on lots of things. 50-100k miles shouldn't be hard.

First thing you need to know is that there are two lil search functions that would have answered these questions easily...but you're a noob so we'll let it slide.

Second thing you need to know is "expensive." RX7's are fickle and very fiicky at times when the privious owners have not treated them propperly. When you buy a second gen always expect to pay what you pay for the car again over the next year. This isn't always the case but too often it is. The 13B is a strong reliable engine when cared for propperly. When it is not a 13B is only a great big mouse wheel. Take extra care when picking one to chack for signs of any abuse to any component of the car. Or be preparred to buy another engine. Just be preparred...it always helps to be preppared.

1986-88 are called S4's. An S4 NA has 140ish crank hp and the TII (some one correct me if I'm wrong) has 180ish. 1989-1991 are called S5's. An S5 NA has 160 and an S5 TII has just over 200hp. Torque isn't something you buy an RX7 for.

It's not any more expensive to build a fast car out of these than it is to do so for any other car. But if you want a wild body kit or something you're fucked. The only one's that rival the aggression that some honda kits have will run you into the thousands for just the front bumper.

gas mileage varies between 10 or less to close to 30...that's too vague a question, besides you never know until you drive it.

12 secs and pss smog might be pushing it but wouldn't rule it out. My NA ran high 13s when she worked...so a lil boost makes it simple...as long as you can support the boost.

A rebuilt done propperly and cared for propperly will last longer than you. Forget to check the oil or something trivial and it'll own you.

Most people will tell you to search, which you should, and read the FAQ thread above. Here are a couple answers though.

87-88 TII 182hp 183tq
89-91 TII 200hp 196tq
Really fast for really cheap.
rebuild range from $1000-5000
Reliable once you work out all the 15y/o car bugs
I get 19 mpg in my TII
12 second car would take about $7-10k including the price of the car, varying depending on rebuild or not.
Good rebuild will last 100k

I forget what the shop is called but it's just off of 200th st. in Langley.

I also find it annoying when people come on message boards and ask a bunch of questions that have already been asked......I did look a bit but I thought this would be a bit faster.

I like RX7s because they're light as hell, rev like ****, and I like the way they look. I'm not looking for any ricey body kits or anything. I am very anti-rice...... I think I'll do a little more research, sounds like they get poor gas milage and need to be rebuilt a lot..... But I still want to find out more....

Thanks for answering my questions guys! I'm suprised how quickly you guys replied!

I get 20 MPG on my N/a and the engine has 153k miles on it. They are reliable.

But don't expect a 12 sec car so be a DD without heavy maintenance.
