Question Question on TII Rx-7's (transmission)

I read the FAQ on what to look for in a 7 already. I owned a 1st gen for about 6 months before I got rid of it because I lost my license and the trans was starting to go bad. Which brings me to my question. What problems do the TII transmissions have generally? About how much HP over stock can they handle before they decide to go? Im asking all this because I plan on leaving for school soon to Florida and can get my license back down there as well. I should have at least 5-6 grand to spend after I sell my Cobra, so finding a decent TII is no problem. I just want to know what I'm getting myself into once I find one. Also about how much money would it cost to get a TII into the 300whp range without porting the motor?

2nd gear synchros tend to crunch due to the wide difference between 1st and 2nd gear.
Trying to do a redline shift from 1st to 2nd will almost always reward you with a crunch.
Reverse tends to be problematic trying to shift into.
Idiots who misshift from 2nd to 5th can cause 5th gear to fail.

This is highly dependent on a lot of things.
Stay way from race-type clutches - i.e. copper puck clutch discs.
Mainly, do you drag race with the car?
FC's with 400hp have reliably used the stock trans with very little fuss.
Going over 500hp starts to be unreliable.
It's really the torque that kills the trans.
500hp at the wheels usually means about 400 lb.-ft. of torque - at the flywheel, it's more like 500 lb.-ft.!

Depends on your mods...
Hybrid turbo with the supporting fuel mods should cost you under $5,000 easily.

Car will only be driven on the off-days I dont feel like taking my streetbike to school/work. I doubt I'll drag race the car, I've gotten that out of my system for the most part lol. Thanks Ted, thats all I really needed to know on what to expect with getting a TII.

Do the problems you mentioned Ted also effect the NA trannys?

Because my NA tranny is a pain to find Reverse in and the syncros on 2nd and one other gear seem to be off a little.
