Question for persons that have completed N/A-T2 swap.
I have an 88 GXL that is going under the knife right after i file my taxes this year. It's needing a new motor so of course i am going to do the logical thing and swap it to a turbo 2 motor. Now before anyone says just sell it and get a turbo 2 let me explain a few things. I bought the car for 500 bucks. I've already started some custom install as far as the stereo goes as well. This will be the car. Anyways, basically i'm looking to do this as basic and smartest way as possible. I can get a hold of a motor and tranny for 1350. Doesn't sound to bad. Now i'm not sure how to find the harness. There's no wrecked t2's that i've been able to find in the area with an intact harness. So where can i find that? An ECU won't be hard to find and an AFM won't be difficult either. I've already secured an TID. I'm more than likely to just buy a new throttle cable. The turbo BOOST SENSOR won't be hard to find either. Now what exactly is this resistor pack that the archived walkthrough refers to???
I'm pretty sure i'm going to have to get a cf HOOD.
I understand that its not recomended to use the n/s transmission so what transmission and driveshaft combo can i use to mate to the existing rear end? And if necessary will the n/a tranny deal with totally stock power from the t2 powerplant? If so what driveshaft would i use? I'm sure that this whole swap has to be harder than it seems but maybe some of you that have actually done it can tell me what i'm missing if anything. Oh yea, i want to keep the existing gauges and add an aftermarked boost gauge, the downpipe as suggested and a FCD. Any issues there? All input would be greatly appreciated, as long as your not telling me to search, i've done that and many of the posts regarding the swap go off into tangents totally non related. And if there's anything i'm going to need that any of you are selling let me know!!! I'm starting to buy peices as of now, Hopefully by May this should be totally completed. Thanks tons.

Emmissions shouldnt be a problem either, what can i remove and block off that isn't necessary or for a convenience{keeping a/c and p/s). I'm thinking the air pump for sure and what else? Where can i get the block off plates and how about the pulleys? I won't have any cats and if i do it will only be for the 30 during emmisions just to pass the visual. so i dont need anything related. Sorry for such along post but i'm full of questions and very excited to start this. thanks again

You'll need all the sensors and crap unless you get a standalone (haltech, which I did) you'll need a hood and downpipe and probably a fcd if you want any power
As far as using the n/a tranny, I am gonna run a minimum of 300rwhp threw it (more like 375rwhp) until I make a couple hundred to buy a t2 tranny, and I believe it is an 88 auto driveshaft that connects to existing rearend, which will be kaaz in my case.
It took me a weekend to swap motors, was painless except for the engine to tranny.

I just finished this project as well.
I took a full TII motor and its harness from a 87
and used the 88 verts trani, shaft and rear end.
it was really easy to do just bolts in, I was lucky enough
to find the motor with all of its sensors, wiring and hood.
the way I did this conversion is the lowest cost way of
doing it, and I feel should hold up to my driving style.
the first thing I suggest you have is the factory wiring
shop manual, despite what everyone says its a good
idea to check the TII harness with the harness of
the motor you remove to confirm that they are the
same, and when you find they are not 100% the same
you will be able to easily adapt the TII harness to
work with your n/a car.
I hope I said this without to much attitude

Whats your complete setup? And are you Suds on n@pistons?
I would reccomend just getting a t2 rear end and do it right the 1st time. k2rd sells all the block-off plates you will need, just check their site. You could buy a silecner such as RacingBeats, that would pass a visual for a cat. Oh and good luck!

You can use the NA AFM, I heard it's differn't than the T2 one, but my car still has the NA one and it runs fine. As for the TID, just do the TID mod. It's EASY, only costs $15, flows a lot better than stock, and it will not crack it's also EASY. However you will have to put a check valve on the stock BOV or get an aftermarket one.
You can't use the automatic driveshaft. Yes it will plug into a t2 trans, and it will bolt up to a NA rear end, but it can't do both at the same time. What I mean is it's to short. Mabey you could have a shop lengthin it?? I would just advise to just go all out and do the whole driveline, or save the $$$ and keep the NA drivetrain. How are you going to drive the car?
Just get the FCD now before you learn the hard way you need one. Also you will need a downpipe, the thunder fabrications one is nice. One piece 3" all the way to the y-pipe for under $200!!
You can loose ALL emitions. do a search for "bare block" I did this and my car has 5 vacume lines on it now, it's great.
this post is not about t2 swaps but it helped me out with the "bare block" setup.
