Question Question to anyone with Transmission Rebuild Experience

I was wondering if anyone could help me identify if my transmission originally came of my 1987 Turbo II. I purchased my car from some who installed a 13B-RE and I am not sure if the transmission came with the engine, or if the transmission was original from my car.

I am in the process of rebuilding my transmission and the master rebuild kit said it would fit my car, but the only part the didn't fit was the 5th gear syncro. Based on the FSM for 1986-1988, the 5th/reverse clutch assembly has two syncro's (one for 5th and one for reverse). I had to replace the sleeve for this assembly and the first oem part that was ordered was too big, so the the Mazda dealer ordered the only other sleeve available, and it was the correct one. The master rebuild kit 5th/reverse syncro's (2) would only fit the first sleeve that was ordered, not the correct sleeve. My transmission only has one syncro for 5th gear and nothing for the reverse gear.

Does anyone know if this type of transmission came with any of the 2nd gens or did it come from the Cosmo?

I have attached a picture of the 5th/reverse gear assembly. Notice that there is only room for 1 syncro (which is broken). I am going to create another thread after I am done with the rebuild so everyone has access to pictures and some informational help. It would be great if I knew what this transmission was. I always thought my transmission was from an 89 TII or newer.

Thanks

more pics needed! it cannot be a cosmo transmission, as the cosmo's were ALL automatic.

i think i see the center bearing holder in the pic, which actually makes it an NA trans, and the non synchro reverse makes it i think a PRE 86 trans.

i think ALL of the turbo transmissions have synchro for reverse.

Okay. It does have a rear center bearing holder which is shown in the Turbo II section of the FSM.

Here are more pictures:

weird. ok i looked at the parts fische, i learned something.

so its a t2 trans. and according to the parts catalog they had 2 reverse gears, synchro and non.

the non synchro cars were built up to vin 522333

the NON synchro 5th gear synchro is V501-17-725.

Thanks for the information. The non-synchro p/n is correct. I just installed it and it fits perfectly. I am glad you learned something.

I had a question about the shifter return to center spring. Mine was broken, so I had to look in another thread to see how it fits. It seems like the shifter wants to return between 3rd and 5th gear. Does the spring in the picture look like is over the hole in the proper location?

I am thinking about bending it slightly so its more toward the right side which should center the shifter.

This is interesting. When I had my T2 transmission rebuilt, they had problems getting the right 5th gear synchro. I have an 88 model but I think the tranny in there was out of an 87. The shop got a master rebuild kit and the 5th gear synchro didn't work. They ended up ordering something from Mazda.

My issue may explain your problem. I think anyone who buys a used TII transmission should also get the last eight of the VIN. This will allow the deal to order the correct parts if needed.

I figured out that the return to center spring is in the correct position. I didn't have the select lock spindle in, so the spring was forcing the shifter past center.

I bet there is a way to tell but I don't have the information you seek as I was not the one rebuilding my transmission three years ago.

yes. they changed the 5th gear synchro when they added the reverse synchro, so if its an S4 trans, and you have no reverse synchro, then you need the early one V501-17-725

if you have a reverse synchro then you need the other one W501-17-725A
