Question about throttle plates
I tried searching, and you all know how the forum can be. I also checked the Haynes manual and FSM and didn't quite find what I'm looking for.
The primary throttle plates, the two that are side by side; should they be fully closed when the throttle is closed? Mine don't close all the way. I have the secondary throttle plates removed, along with the associated vacuum hoses and diaphrams. The Haynes manual and FSM say that the measurement should be taken when the #1 secondary starts to open. I'm wondering if they should be fully closed when no pressure is applied to the throttle. I have another motor in the garage. I took the TB off and looking at the back of it, the primary plates are closed all the way. Is this how it should be or should they be opened some?

I think it should be open a little since gas is always going to the engine even when not on the throttle when the car is on. If they stayed closed I think you would have a hard time idling.

Firtly, your naming is a bit off. Those are the secondary throttles you're talking about; they feed the secondary ports. The ones removed during the TB mod are the #2 secondary throttles. The one on its own that starts to open first is the primary throttle; it feeds the primary ports.
The secondary throttles are supposed to be completely closed until the primary throttle is about 10% open.
