FL Question about steering rack leak and Power Steering

Hello, Recently as i was pulling my Rx7 (1991 S5) out of my garage one of my plastic boots (drivers side steering rack) bursted open and it started leaking P/S fluid everywhere. I removed my P/S belt and tried to clamp the boot but it still bled out. My question is, what are my options here? My friend suggests replacing the whole steering rack because he said the seals are broken. But a steering rack is $$$ plus i dont know if its a job i can do by myself. Can i just replace the boot and enable P/S?, or should i continue driving with no P/S and just replace the boot? (will this cause any damage?) Finally is it worth it to get the whole steering rack? and if so, is there a write up i could use?

Suggestions, advise, comments greatly appretiated.

you need to replace the entire steering rack unfortunatley, because the seals are torn. replacing the boot will not fix the problem. And yes driving with no power steering fluid, will damage the power steering pump. You can find them for reasonable prices online at rockauto.com or autopartswarehouse.com, partstrain.com,carstuff.com etc

Seeing as i am also about to undertake this same job, how hard is it to switch the rack out? i already have another rack, i will be doing a 5 lug swap at the same time as well.

How does this rank on the nightmare scale?

It's quite straightforward and not particularly difficult.

buy a new rack and a Haynes manual and you'll be set.
