Question about fuel pumps

I just bought a 91 that wont run and the shop i bought it from said it was loosing compression. However, upon further examination i find out the fuel pump isnt priming and theengine just isnt getting fuel. My question is will a fuel pump out of an 87 work on the 91? both cars are n/a and the pump in the 87 is almost brand new. Any help will be greatly appreciated!! Thanks guys!!

I believe the fuel pumps are universal among the FCs.

//EDIT: Sorry, NA fuel pumps are the same and TII fuel pumps are the same, but they're different between the NA/Turbos.

Have you checked the voltage and grounds on the connector going to the fuel pump? It's not unheard of for the grounds on the fuel pump to get flakey and cause problems. You might want to try cleaning those up first, and check the voltage at the connector on the left shock tower.

I don't think the fuel pumps go bad terribly often, but the electrical connections to them do tend to get bad (actually, throughout the car).

Also, you know that you can access the fuel pump from the top of the tank through the access panel in the back, right?

I've seen that PRIMING word before and don't understand it at all. When you turn the key to ON, the fuel pump does not work. Period. Not for a nanna second. The fuel pump works IF the key is HELD to START.

The fuel pump works if the engine starts and the is then returned to ON.

The fuel pump works if the fuel pump check connector is jumpered AND the key is turned to ON.

Yeah, nanosecond. Not nanna second.

The fuel pump is a wear out item.
They last many years, but not forever.

Everything about the RX-7 is in the on-line copy of the manuals at the link in my sig.
Check out the "fuel & emmissions" section for how to test the fuel pump.

i tested the fuel pump at the connector under the hood by the shock tower and got nothing no sound period. Nothing with the key on or off nothing. Ill check the grounds tonight, and yes i know i can get to it throught the access panell in the back. If I ground it and still get nothing then Ill swap em around. Thanks guys Ill keep you posted and ill put up pics of the old and new cars.

Double check your ENGINE fuse. It must be intact for the pump work through the Circuit Opening Relay. It's located in the fuse box in the interior. I THINK the third row from the bottom row of fuses. See FAQ thread for a picture.
