Question about checking timing w/ timing light

Ok, here's my dilemma. On the timing gun, it says put the clamp on the reference piston, usually #1. Well, I have no spark on either leading coils, so I can't use that. Could I use my T1 as a reference?

There are certain types of timing lights that won't function with the 7 ignition. Are you stating the light will work on the trailing only? If it does function on the trailing, it should work on the leading.
