Question about bolt size....and rotor/caliper removal

I just need to know what size the nut is for the rear rotors, that holds the rotor on. The big *** one in the center. It is bigger than anything I have, so I will need to go buy a new socket for it tomorrow. I just need to know what size it is so I can get the rotor off. Reason being, is I went to change the brakes (1st time since the three years that Ive owned the car, I never drive it.) and it seems like the last guy who put the calipers on used loc-tite or soemthing, and I snapped bolt 14mm bolts that hold the caliper right off... So I figure if I can remove the rotor, I can slide the rotor out of the caliper, and the hopefully be able to back the broken studs out of the caliper. Then just get 2 new bolts. Will this work? Anyway, just need to know the size of the large nut in the center of the rear rotor. Thanks..

get out the tape measure and measure it. i dont wont to sound like a smart *** but thats the easy way to do it. go to auto-zone, they have a loan a tool program and they might rent the realy big soccet you need so that you dont have to buy it for one use. good luck

Id you broke the caliper mounting bolts, taking the rotors off won't matter, you won't be able to! The caliper holds the rotor in place, so that baby ain't moving unless that caliper comes off.

Yea, I know I can do that. But it is now midnight, and I dont feel like driving down the street to my garage, taking my wheel off, and measuring it so that I can stop on the way home from work tomorrow, when Im sure someone here knows the answer off-hand. And Id rather buy it than just rent it, Im sure It will be needed sometime in the future... Thanks

Edit: and N4ji, the heads of the bolts are now off, and the threads are in the calipers themselves, and the back mounting plate is not threaded. So it seems that if the rotor can be removed, the caliper will now come with it. Then I can slide the rotor out of the caliper, and try and get the snapped off bolts out.

The rotor..pretty much. There caliper mouting place is in between the rotor, and a mouting bracket. The bolt goes through the bracket, and threads into the rotor. But it does not thread into the bracket. So now that there is no head to these bolts, once the rotor is loosened, the caliper *should* (If I am thinking this through correctly..) just come off with it. Which at this point I can slide out the rotor, and try and back out the broken bolts. Go take a look at how the rear caliper is set up, then imagine if the bolts were gone. It should make sense then..

See above. The brake rotors are held on by two machine screws and not the nut in the center. The picture shows one screw in and one removed.

Ah,...Yes I knew those screws held the rotor on, but I thought the large center nut did also... Thanks!

Then how come only one of your rear rotors has those screws?

Probably because someone took them off before at one point, and never put them back on. Its not uncommon, alot of people dont even bother. I dont think either of my rear rotors have those screws anymore...

The caliper does not hold the rotor in place. You can take the rotor off easily without taking the caliper off but you will have to screw the brake pistons back into the housing. Your parking brake must NOT be on when you do this.

Hmm..could you please elaborate more on how to do this? Does the rotor slide onto the studs, or are the studs pressed into the rotor itself?

The brake rotor slides over the studs.

The brake rotors can be stuck sometimes, but there is a threaded hole you can use to force the rotor off of the end of the hub.

Yea, so I can just screw something into that hole, and it will force the rotor off?

Yes. That's my car. I recently replaced the entire brake system.

I had some trouble breaking the old brake lines loose, and bleeding the master cylinder was an adventure. The real trick is to take everything apart without breaking anything (and bleeding the brake lines correctly). Check out this post I did a while back for some details:
