Question about Automatic Transmission interchangeablitly

Are the automatic transmissions interchangeable between series? I tried searching but it seems like everyone avoids autos like the plague lol.

S5 auto has an electronic control unit while the S4 doesn't. One of the reasons for the control unit is the S5 has a "hold feature" function not found on the S4.

Does the control unit control all the functions of the transmission? I only ask because I am helping someone who has an s5 that has found an s4 replacement and wants to know if it would work.
