Question about 1988 Turbo
Hey everybody, I'm a domestic owner and lover at heart, but you know as you start modding your car, it becomes more of a treat to drive rather than having to be your daily driver....well, my roommate and I (he is in the same situation as me with Modding our cars, except he drives a 99 Camaro SS) want to buy a car for the two of us to drive around instead of always having to take our cars for regular errands, and stuff like that... Anyway, we were at Texas World Speedway today and saw a 1988 RX-7 for sale. We talked to the guy, he said it had a fire, and the only things ruined was the harness and injectors. I need some help on how much this stuff costs, and if it is easily replaceable by two mechanically inclined guys, if I can get it used, where I can find it, etc etc.. I'm new to this board, and I appreciate and help you guys might be. I don't know much about import performance and things like that, but I'd like to learn more so we can decide if this is a good car to buy. He only wants $1000 for it! Does that sound like a good deal? He says the engine runs fine etc etc, just have to replace those couple things. And I think it was a 5 speed, I can't remember, didn't look at that. Let me know, I appreciate it everyone!

Former Moderator. RIP Icemark.
Blown motor 87-88 RX-7 Turbos typically go for between $500-$1200, so one that has had a fire where you will have to replace the whole engine harness (and probably parts of the front harness as well) a lot of rubber/hoses, and probably the entire intake and hood would not be worth anymore than $500.
And if injectors and harness are burnt I doubt the engine runs.

Your wiring harness can run from $150 and up depending on condition and source,
The injectors can be bout for around $100 for all 4 but then add another $100 to get them cleaned.
The pulsation damper will need replaced, odds are its what failed and caused the fire. $130
All of the vacuum lines and coolant lines, of course you could get rid of many of the emissions and cut down on what vacuum lines you need to just a few....
Do a search here for spider removal, emissions removal and the like...
You could also pull the TID and check the cold side play of the turbo....
How many miles are on it? Whats the condition of the rest of the car?
Take a look at the For Sale section here to get an idea what TII's go for....
Also take a look at Partstrader.com for pricing of parts...
The harness isn't really that bad for replacement... Its going to be the nightmare of vacuum lines that melted, the oil injector lines and such...

There is no difference between import performance and any other performance. more air+more fuel= more power.
Fuel injectors for the car you were looking at are not too expensive, but there isn't anywhere to buy a new wire harness that I know of. Used ones are brittle and can break easily. I don't know if $1000 is a good price, I haven't seen the body or heard it run. If the body is straight (exterior and interior) I would buy it. Is it a turbo or non turbo? If you are looking for a daily driver, then this seems like a car that can be that with a little repair. If you don't know a lot about rotary engines, then you may want to go with a Honda or something else.

Yeah it's a turbo. I'll do some searches. Thanks for any input, and if anybody has any input it is all appreciated! Thanks.
