PVC intake causes noxious fumes??

I mentioned in an earlier post that I was going to do the TID mod using PVC pipe, and someone said that it could cause noxious fumes. Can anyone else support this statement? If I go with plastic tubing, do I have to use the ABS type? If so can it be found at major dealers like home depot?

I don't know exactly how much heat PVC can take before it starts outgassing, but I do know that you use CPVC (instead of PVC) pipes in your home for the hot water runs due to the inability of PVC to tolerate the heat without chemically breaking down...

That help any?

yeah, thanks. I've been calling around all day looking for ABS piping and I finally found that Lowes carries it. I'm gonna check it out and hopefully they have what I need.

Yep. PVC releases chlorine when it gets warm. The engine bay will easily generate these kinds of temperatures. It also tends to get soft...

Here in Canada, 90% of new construction uses ABS pipe for drains because of this very issue. We have strict building codes.

PVC = poly vinyl chloride
Heat it up and it releases chlorine gas like others have mentioned.

Im not sure the budget you are on but I just bought a "Performance" intake pipe that autozone had for a honda that was like 40$, Its a 90 degree bent pipe and I just cut it to size with a hack saw. looks better then PVC.
