puting my trans back on sucks ***

Ok, so I had posted about a problem about my clutch possibly going out due to it not going in first and grinding in reverse. I fugured out it was my pilot bearing was destroyed, and I replaced it, so now Im trying to get my trans back on, and its the biggest pain in the ***. Its about 1 inch away and I cant get it to go any further. Any ideas, or tricks to getting that thing back on? Or does any body live in So cal, or the IE to possibly help?

If you can, jack up the front of the engine to give you a better angle. Alternately you can use a friend to push on the engine.

...and get a friend. It is sorta hard to do by yourself, especially laying on your back.

since everything is out, i would highly recomend you unbolt the clutch , and check everything, especially since you had a problem. Check pilot bearing, and clutch condition. Also see if your rear main oil seal is leaking, now is the time to change it. Rebolt and realign everything. Lightly greast parts as needed

Yeah, lifting front of the engine helps a little. Never use tranny bolts to bring tranny closer to engine. However, you can use the bolts for alignment if you got it close enough, or if you got a longer bolt to use. Look for an even gap all around and try to use a prybar if you can. your shifter is out right? put hte tranny crossmembera nd tranny mount on tranny too, its a bitch to put on later

^ like he said. also....tilt the engine back a bit...and replace pilot and T/O....check the clutch too....this sounds like something you're not gunna want to do again soon.

Make sure the pilot and T/O are factory pieces.

Yep..the Best way to get the trans and engine together is to Get the *** of the engine DOWN and the front of the engine UP..Trust me,I put in a Trans On my own,and I have four Shot Discs and vertebrae in my lower back.I put the trans on my Legs, got the Bellhousing on my knees and grabbed the tail stock and slid on my back, little by little,It went in NO problem..I used a Chunk of wood, placed between the Clutch fan and the Rad shroud..you don't need to have it aiming to the sky(haha),but maybe up about two inches from Level,to get the transmission to go in.

ok, so i tried once again, and no luck. Its just not going all the way in. I dont know what the hell is up. I took the clutch apart again, and made sure it was aligned. I noticed some bolts in the middle of the trans. Does anybody recommend taking them off so I can put the front part of the trans on first, and hopefully get a better angle that way? I dont know what ele to do

lol not gonna lie, i know its a bad idea to use the bolts to get it closer but when puttin my friends t2 engine back in his FB we simply got it to line up and slowly moved it in with the help of the bolts and its proved no problems so far.. im not exactly suggesting it though if theres another way you can do it

Umm, I hope you're not considering what I think you're considering. You can't put the tranny on 1/2 at a time. Really really don't take the bolts out.

Ok..I'll say this again..get the engine to Tilt UP at the front and Down at the back,.(so it looks like the darn thing is gonna Fly out of the Engine bay.it doesn't have to be SUPER tilted just tilted a BIT.)..With the Clutch ON the flywheel, and the Pressure plate, clutch disc ETC all lined up on the Flyhweel,Grab the Transmission. The transmission should have NO Mounts on it..Lie on the ground,Under the car,Spread eagle, and place the Transmission on your legs.Pull the Trans onto your Legs and get it so that the Bell housing will be inbetween your Knees.then put your Hands on the Tail stock and Lift the Tail stock so that you can guide the Trans with your Elbows...I Swear to ya,I've done this 3 times!!..Twice with N/A transmissions and Once with a TII trans(*they are Freakin Heavy!)..it will Go IN if everything is lined up!..NOTE: there should be a STUD on the Top Passenger Side of the Rear of the engine.Once the trans is ON,then put that One Nut on for safety.the rest of the bolt holes line up,with the Dowels that stick out of the Rear housing..JUST make sure that the Pilot bearing is NOT Damaged..if the Needles on the bearing are Compromised then they May be Preventing the Shaft from going in all the Way..(that is the ONLY Big Deal to worry about,..if the Clutch goes onto the Transmission Input shaft than the 2 Main parts SHOULD by rights go together Without Issue.)..GOOD luck..and POST with results.

clutch disc not aligned properly (I read you did it twice, but those plasting things are worth their weight in dogshit) or soumething is wrong with the pilot bearing. Other than that it's all about getting it aligned.

If you go to a Auto parts Store..get a Clutch alignment tool... Igot one for 12 bucks!..or use a Piece of Wooden Dowel that is Small enough to go in the Pilot bearing hole(just Cut it to fit with a Knife)but Big enough to Line up the inner Splines on the Clutch and Pressure plate...we're With ya on this one Buddy!..I know it's a pain in the *** when it doesn't go,but trust me,It's patience and a Little muscle, and then When you least expect it,Bam!..the damn thing slides in Like Butter!..

i feel for you on this one man, my pilot bearing went out and i got a new clutch kit and everything but we(3 of us) tried for about 4 hours to get that thing on..decided to pull the engine put the whole thing in at once and...well...i decided to just go for broke and build build build. That was in March. I really really hope you get it on soon, Ive been missing my car terribly as well as money.

Yeah, I had to align it twice with the tool myself on the '86. It was difficult (took about 3 hours of hard work) but it was worth it to have a good clutch again!

I wish I had thought of raising the front of the engine up, that would probably have made it easier.
