I dunno about taking your hood off. Running those times youd probably lose more time on aerodynamics then youd gain on weight savings.

Nah... more drag... you'll be slower on the top end.

Try things like PS pump, airpump. Stupid little thinks like the silencer for the airpump, the cold start assist, windshield washer reservoir and pump, etc. Remove the sound deadener under your carpet. Rear wiper. Get a light battery for racing (garden tractor battery- thanks to Chris and Ari for that tip.) Center console/armrest section (have to relocate the switch for the mirrors if you do that, as well as the light for the security system, etc.) but it's pretty heavy. Take out the passenger seat when you race. Ditto jack and spare.

My 86' Base model came with an aluminum hood... My friend who sold it to me (who has owned several FC's and currently drives a 10AE) told me it's pretty damn rare to have an 86 with aluminum...

I don't thinnk that it's rare to have an aluminum hood on an 86 base. I've owned two and they both had aluminum hoods. I took a magnet to both of them. I've heard that if you have an aluminum jack and spare that the hood is too(I'm not sure about this but both of my cars had the aluminum jack and spare. I would sell them but one was ruined in a crash and the other one melted when my car caught on fire(while I was driving it ). I have a video of it burning if anyone wants to see it.

(sorry about my spelling it'slike 2:30 and I should be in bed)

Checking aluminum Hood

The simplest way to check the hood to determine AL or Steel is to lift them. Once they are in the air, check the hood latch. On the steel hood its bolted on, the aluminum is riveted on. Simple.
The factory manual also cautions, that if you put an aluminum in place of the steel one, change the hood lifts also. The steel will react with the aluminum, no good. In the manual!

Oh god, not the hood discussion again. Hood distribution was almost random. Any car of any year can have any hood, but convertibles, early 86s and a few others were more prone to getting the aluminium hood....

Talking oh yeah!

i guess i lucked out when i bought my 7s, both of them have the aluminum hood! and they are both 86, ones a base and the other is a GXL. I didn't notice until I lifted a hood in the junkyard and wow, what a difference! well, thats my hood story
Happy rotoring

Actually, the steel hood latch is spot welded onto the steel hood. But the aluminum does have pop rivets holding the latch in.
