FIRST QUESTION
HOW in the WORLD do you have 1,341 posts... on an RX7 forum ...and ... not ... know this ..???
Please answer me this.
But anyways here
http://auto.howstuffworks.com/differential.htm
that is a GREAT site to give you the basics. As far as issues with RX7 LSDs, I think that the S4 mechanical LSD is favored over the S5 Viscous. But both stock are great to learn with. I have an 88 N/A GTU that has the stock mechanical LSD and I have been beating the crap out of it since I got the car and it's working great.

The s4 diff reacts quicker but wears out, espeically with hard use. The s5 diff lasts longer but is slower to react. It can also wear out over time, but isn't rebuildable like the s4 mechanical diff. For the best of both worlds, you can swap in the torsen diff from a miata. There is a writeup about it in the archives.

The Cause of Death
Launch your car. Now use your brain. Would it accelerate faster if one tire was spinning trying to move the car, or if both rear tires were contacting the pavement and trying to move the car?
